Size
The Fascinate clocks in at a huge 4 inch screen whereas the Incredible is a smaller 3.7 inches. Though the larger screen might seem instantly favorable, the 3.7” screen suffices for average sized hands which might find the Fascinate too much of a stretch. On the other hand, if watching movies and browsing the Internet is the main use the phone is going to be put through, it’s best to go with the Fascinate. The Fascinate also wins on accounts of its superior display discussed below.
Display
There is simply no comparison between the screen on the Fascinate and the Incredible. The Super AMOLED on the Fascinate produces some of the deepest blacks and contrasts ever seen on a phone screen, bested perhaps only by the IPS Retina screen on the iPhone 4. The Incredible’s screen doesn’t do too badly; the TFT LCD WQVGA manages to produce good saturation levels and is quite readable in bright sunlight which the Fascinate unfortunately isn’t very good at.
Camera
The Incredible packs a solid 8MP snapper while the Fascinate comes with a 5MP one. Both are able to shoot 720p video. As is commonly perceived, the 8MP camera manages a better result due to distinctly higher levels of details and significantly less noise reduction. The pictures from the Incredible were also more realistic and did not look oversaturated like the Fascinate. However, one should note that the Fascinate packs a better LED flash which was just bright enough whereas the Incredible’s flash tends to cause pictures to lose detail.
Hardware
Both phones offer solid build quality, but the real difference comes with the internals. The Fascinate and the Incredible ship with 512MB RAM but the 1 GHz processors in both the phones offer far different performance levels in tasks like web browsing and gaming. Sites opened noticeably faster on the Fascinate which has a dedicated GPU alongside its Hummingbird core unlike the Incredible which has an integrated Snapdragon core. Gaming should be a much smoother affair on the Fascinate thanks to the dedicated GPU, something which also makes the original Motorola Droid a much better gaming device than its 550 MHz processor would suggest.
Another point of difference between the two phones is that the Fascinate comes with 16GB of internal memory whereas the Incredible has only 8GB. So if you’re planning to carry around a lot of music/movies then the Fascinate may be your phone of choice.
Interface
For any serious Android user, the Touchwiz 3D interface on the Fascinate is a sort of let down. The skin is not very aesthetically pleasing whereas the Sense UI on the Incredible is a fantastically well integrated and smooth skin which does a great job of integrating information in one place which the Touchwiz 3D unfortunately fails at. The Fascinate also carries with it the almost-fatal flaw of having Bing as its default search provider, an option which can’t be changed. With most of the world using Google at the moment, it’s ironical that Google’s own operating system doesn’t carry its default search engine.
The verdict? The jury is split on this one. The Fascinate offers superior processing power and greater real estate which results in a great multimedia and web browsing experience. However, for day to day tasks, the Incredible’s (relatively) compact size is much more manageable and the difference in speed for normal tasks is negligible. The Incredible also offers a better camera at a better resolution, coupled with the elegant Sense UI, though the Fascinate scores for its resplendent Super AMOLED screen. Which one you go for ultimately depends on whether you’re a power user or the average smart phone user. The Incredible suits the latter whereas the Fascinate is tailored for the former
